10 Key Questions Generated by an Award and a Declaration that Make Sense to Some and No Sense To Some.

June 14, 2018

For President Muhammadu Buhari to make any political gain from his unprecedented sagacity in bequeathing a posthumous award to late Chief M.K O Abiola and declaring June 12 as Democracy Day, there are ten guiding questions he needs to attend to, taken from the perspective of June 12 warriors.
1. RESPECT PEOPLES’ FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS
Voiced by: FEMI FALANA
”I urge you Mr President, to direct all security forces in Nigeria and the police, in the spirit of June 12, to respect the fundamental rights of every Nigerian in this country”

2. STOP THE KILLINGS IN THE LAND
Voiced by: AFENIFERE
“Without stopping all these killings in the land, honouring Abiola is not enough to bring back the confidence. If our people are being killed like this in the first term and nothing is being done, what will happen in the second term?

3. RESTORE NIGERIA TO TRUE FEDERALISM
Voiced by: NADECO
“Nigeria should stop living a lie by calling itself a federation when it is, in fact, being governed centrally,”

4. DECLARE ABIOLA EX-PRESIDENT
Voiced by: OGBENI RAUF AREGBESOLA
“We believe he must be declared the President and recognised as such with all rights and privileges accorded to him. But he has been recognised as a recipient of yet to be fully declared mandate through a posthumous national honour, the highest national honour reserved only for Presidents.”

5. RESTORE POWER TO NIGERIANS
Voiced by: HAFSAT ABIOLA-COSTELLO
“And President Muhammadu Buhari, this fight will not take you God willing as it has taken MKO but let us fight and bring about the conclusion of MKO struggle that the Nigerian people should be the ones in full control of this country.”
6. ENSURE FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS
Voiced by: DR JOE OKEI-ODUMAKIN
“It is our wish that the essential spirit of June 12 takes firm root in our land with free and fair election and become a norm in our land.

7. STOP SHOWING LOYALTY TO ABACHA
Voiced by: PROF WOLE SOYINKA
“It is not possible to honour MKO Abiola in one breadth and admire his tormentor in another breadth. Loyalty is all very well but loyalty can become perverse if that loyalty is retained to an individual who if he were alive today would be before the International Court of Crimes against Humanity.”

8. REMOVE BABAGANA KINGIBE’S AWARD
Voiced by: NA’ALLAH MOHAMMED ZAGGA
“This was a running mate who opportunistically deserted Abiola and abandoned him to his fate, and ignobly lapped up an appointment from Dictator Sani Abacha, the military usurper. Treachery should not be rewarded, lest our children perceive it as fashionable.”

9. ESTABLISH A HALL OF SHAME
Voiced by: PROF WOLE SOYINKA
“Today perhaps is also a day to inaugurate our hall of shame so that as we have hall of heroes in one hand, we also have hall of shame as a lesson to future generations.’’

10. WAGE WAR AGAINST POVERTY
Voiced by: FEMI FALANA
“Mr President, we want you to engage Nigerians to wage a meaningful fight against poverty in this country. We have enormous resources to make every Nigerian happy,”
