SIMs/NINs Directive: Time to rescue  telecoms industry” – Vanguard

Vanguard’s analysis of the recent tragic regulatory interference in CommTech industry is apt. One of the good ones, so far, on the subject.

Unlike others, it recognises that what we are dealing with is not a regular industry regulation but an illadvised ministerial interference in regulation.

The good story is that a somersault has been announced but that does not address the main subject. It addresses the nonsensical nuisance component which is not, in my opinion, as important as the core issue of interference.

It also posits that regulation is comatose amidst all of this, which signals the beginning of the end. That, though fundamental, is a different matter entirely.

Meanwhile, from all indications, Chairman-NCC, EVC-NCC, DG-NITDA, DG-NIMC, ECTS/ECSM-NCC, Chairman ALTON, CEOs of MTN, Airtel, Ntel, Glo, Smile, and 9Moble are now used to meeting with their Minister only to receive instructions.

That, really, is the crux of the matter.

For an industry that sets rapid transformation, 2023 is a long long time away.
