A hint was dropped yesterday by Vice- Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, that the University would soon commence study work at building an oil refinery to enhance training and research in the subject.

He was giving a Goodwill Address at the Alumni Lecture and First Annual General Meeting of the University of Lagos Faculty of Engineering Alumni Association a Branch of UNILAG Alumni Association.

Professor Ogundipe said building a refinery for training and research on-campus would not be a pioneering effort as such had happened in the past. In fact a study group might soon be on its way to Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria where one already exists to compare notes and peer-review the project. He instantly co-opted Engr Funso Kupolokun, who was present at the meeting, into the study group to strengthen the effort. Mr. Kupolokun, a petroleum engineer, is a former Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC.

The Alumni Lecture titled “Alumni Association: A veritable Tool for Networking and Promotion of Professionalism” was delivered by Engr Dideolu Falobi, Managing Director of Cresta Laurel Ltd.

Mr. Falobi used the robust catalogue of objectives of the Alumni phenomenon to make very solid case for universality of the Alumni Concept. He used two study cases namely: of Stanford University USA; and of Methodist High School Ilesa (OSAMETHSI); to demonstrate the unlimited opportunities which Alumni Associations are capable of unleashing to their Alma Maters and to their members.

The Annual General Meeting reviewed and passed a Constitution for the association, launched a Newsletter, commissioned a Website, inaugurated a Faculty-Industry Advisory Board, approved the appointment of a Board of Trustees and elected a National Executive Committee.

Engr Dr. Oye Eribake Chairs the Board of Trustees while Engr Titi Omo-Ettu Chairs the National Executive Committee.
